Quinten Parker is by far, my all-time favorite hero. So much so, that I wrote a three-book series featuring him and the pain, love and triumphs of his life. Harlequin has reissued the entire series. A novel notebook is a must have. Although it may sound like old school with all the current technology, having a 3 ring binder to contain your work in progress is a win-win. Divide the binder into sections: Synopsis, Character Bio, Setting, Chapter Details, Pictures, Notes. Add the information per section. It will always be available to you during the course of your writing. When you are finished with the novel, remove the pages and store them in an envelope labeled with the name of the book, pub date and publisher then file them away, and your notebook is ready for your next masterpiece.

As hard as it may be sometimes, to be a successful writer you need to get into the habit of doing writerly things: writing everyday (even if it is only notes or journal entries, or editing previous written work) and you MUST read. And not just pop culture books. Read across the board. Read outside of your comfort zone. Read the newspapers. Read!!!

If you hate typing as much as I do, you may want to invest in Dragon Naturally Speaking 10. Once you train it, which takes about a half hour, it works like a dream. You simply dictate into the microphone and the text appears on your page at lightening speed. There will be glitches of course, but is sure beats typing! I love it.

No matter how difficult is may seem, or even if you believe down in your soul that you don’t have time, you must write everyday. Even if it is not the novel or current project that you are working on. Write something. Revise, take notes. Whatever. But you have to keep the adrenaline flowing. And the more you get away from writing and forming good writing habits the more difficult it will become for you later on. Remember a writer writes!

Your backlist is your lifeline. Simply because you have a new book, don’t forget the one before it, and the one before that. There are thousands of readers out there who have not read everything you have written, and there are readers who may like one type of story more than others. Keeping your backlist alive, will keep you in the hands of readers.

I writer should be acknowledged for the magic they bring to the page, the smiles they put on a readers face, the thoughts they put in readers heads. They should be acknowledged for their skills, their bravery for exposing their inner-selves to the world, for contributing to the plethora of literature. They should not be only acknowledged by the color of their skin.

I finally finished HARTE’S REWARD, one of three books in the Millionaire series along with Adrianne Byrd and Celeste Norfleet. It is our take on the Bravo TV hit Millionaire Matchmaker. This three-book series hits stores this Summer. My story, HARTE’S REWARD, coming in August, focuses on Melanie Harte the owner of The Platinum Society (the name of the business), who has been so focused on finding love for everyone else, she has forgotten about herself. So now, she has not only one very eligible bachelor hot on her heels, but two! How lucky is that? Now of course she can’t have them both. Who will she choose? I’m debating that very question myself as I work feverishly on completion of the book. It will be released August 2010
